It's possible to have a open source AI asset generation that works?

I’ve tried to use image generation to generate some assets for a 2d game, and it failed hard. What are the tools that can be used and are open source? It’s even possible? The post discuss why I think it’s not working, but maybe I’m looking on the wrong spots. All feedback is welcome.
