Why Did ls Sort clip_10 Before clip_1? Three Orders for One Folder of Numbered Clips

Twelve numbered clips, three tools, three orders. In en_US.UTF-8, ls put clip_10 before clip_1; Python's listdir did not sort at all. Zero-padded names were the fix every tool agreed on.
