Two new howler monkey species from Amazonia
Two howler monkeys, Alouatta iroi and Alouatta matogrossensis, separated by genome-wide analysis of 11 howler species across South and Central America. They are the first new howler species recognised in 84 years, with major Amazonian rivers acting as the barriers that split the lineages. Alouatta matogrossensis lives in southern Amazonia, one of the fastest-deforesting regions on Earth.
